Child-Resistant Closure Testing

Child-resistant (CR) bottle caps are closures required on some products, such as cleaners and medications, to prevent children from accessing potentially toxic items. Bottle cap testing serves as valuable quality control, verifying functionality while minimizing risk.

At Perritt Laboratories, we are pioneers in child-resistant package testing. We have helped shape and refine industry-accepted protocols and methodologies for CR testing since 1973, in collaboration with regulatory bodies and industry partners. We offer CR testing for both re-sealable and non-resealable packaging.

Work With Perritt Laboratories, the Premier Laboratory for CR Closure Testing

At Perritt Laboratories, we have decades of experience with Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. When regulators see our name on documentation, our reputation for strict testing protocols and excellence stands out.

We offer testing in compliance with all relevant requirements, including:

  • CPSC’s Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) of 1970, 16 CFR Part 1700.
  • International Standard ISO 8317, which outlines child-resistant packaging requirements and testing procedures for reclosable systems.
  • European Standards EN 8317 and EN 14375 establish performance standards for child-resistant and senior-friendly packaging.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 40 CFR Parts 162 and 157, Subpart B, which outline requirements for pesticide packaging.

As part of our child-resistant closure testing services, we evaluate both child-safety and adult-accessibility to ensure intended end users can access your product. We’re a cGMP and FDA-registered independent testing laboratory, and we provide detailed reports to help you make any necessary refinements to your CR packaging.

Our Bottle Cap Testing Services

We offer child-resistant closure testing for multiple types of bottle caps, including:

These caps require you to push down while turning the cap to align the notches on the bottle with the tabs on the cap so they can move as one. Manufacturers use these bottle tops for vitamins and medications, and in some cases design them so adults can remove the CR outer cap to reveal a more accessible cap underneath.

Brands often use these bottle tops for liquids, such as cleaners and pesticides. To open them, you need to squeeze both sides of the cap while turning the top.

The design of these tops includes a triangle or other shape on both the cap and bottle. You must align the two shapes and lift the cap. These caps are common with prescription medications.

With this bottle, there is a small angled piece of plastic under the lid. When you press a tab on the bottle, this piece of plastic lowers, allowing you to twist the bottle top to open it. This type of cap is common with prescription medication.
